Jagbir Jhutti Johal

Jagbir Jhutti-Johal is Professor of Sikh Studies in the Department of Theology and Religion, University of Birmingham.

Bio

She has over 25 years’ experience in teaching and research, and provides extensive knowledge and experience in Sikh theology, inter-faith dialogue and contemporary issues, especially contested issues that confront the community, nationally and globally. Jagbir was a Commissioner on The Commission on Religion and Belief in British Public Life (CORAB), convened in 2013 by The Woolf Institute. She is regularly called upon by policy makers to provide a Sikh input into consultations. She is a steering group member on the UK Freedom of Religion or Belief Forum and member of the Panel of Experts on Freedom of Religion or Belief by the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe)/ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights).

She was recently appointed Commissioner on the Independent Commission on Community & Cohesion.Jagbir is a board member and trustee on several organisations, such as Faiths for the Climate and Race Equality Foundation. She is a Layperson on Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Women’s Network and is very involved in interfaith work and voluntary work within the community, especially around women and children’s issues. She has cofounded Women’s Faith Forum in 2020 with the aim ensuring the voices of women are better heard amongst policy makers.

Jagbir is the first Sikh female contributor to the Thought for the Day segment on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
